Hi i have suffered from this issue as well. My warning is not boot.ini though it is as follows-
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.
Is this the same as the boot.ini issue? Don't wanna do the wrong thing.
Help.

and since people aren't going to read a whole 50 pages of posts i'll just repost this again:
if you have this issue and can not boot to the point of being able to recreate the file youself see this article for instructions on how to recreate the boot.ini file via the recovery console from your windows xp cd.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184/en-us
this will recreate the file without having to try to figure it out youself
if you can can not boot from an XP cd, get a set of boot floppies made from a good installation of xp somewhere, then you can use a usb floppy to get a recovery console to repair your installation, but you will need access to a machine that has a working copy of xp installed on it
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824632/en-us
I have just tried this fix above...i didn't get ver far.
'bootcfg /list - there are no boot entries to display 'bootcfg /rebuild - failed to succesfully scan the disks for windows instillations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent bootcfg from succesfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detct an disk errors...'
so...what do i do next?? ------------------------------------------------ 'The thing always happens that you really believe in... and the belief in a thing makes it happen' - Frank Loyd Wright |

As someone said earlier, you probably need to turn AHCI off in your bios, I'm guessing (probably in Advanced Chipset Features or some such). Windows can't see your drives.
Ok well i am one of the poor sods who shut down and can reboot. I have tried to do the Microsoft fix and it wont find/read the disk or list boot files because it cannot find any. It said i must use scandisk to locate errors on the drive..i did and now it says there are are unrecoverable eerros on the drive.
Now i am completely stuck. Where can i find info on how to disable the AHCI cos this is really starting to **** me off. Its a flippin ú4000 XPS and its not evne mine ffs!
Please help meh! ------------------------------------------------ 'The thing always happens that you really believe in... and the belief in a thing makes it happen' - Frank Loyd Wright |

So I can give you appropriate information, if you bought your system, who made it and what is the model number (i.e. HP Pavillion yadda yadda)?
Hi Kennet...it worked. I chose the 2nd drive not the first and it let me sign onto admin this time round. It found the files and i am now up and running.
Thank you for your offer of help much appreciated. If anyone else is interested ...this link worked for me. If your PC had two drives make sure you choose the right one.
Good luck. ------------------------------------------------ 'The thing always happens that you really believe in... and the belief in a thing makes it happen' - Frank Loyd Wright |

Question....is it now possible to 'upgrade' from classic to premium now? Or is it best to install the premium from scratch?
Thanks in advance.
